The 2012 Obama Campaign’s use of behavioral scientists was unprecedented.

We all need to use more science and research-based methods to improve persuasion.

“In the way it used research, this was a campaign like no other,” said Todd Rogers, a psychologist at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and a former director of the Analyst Institute. “It’s a big change for a culture that historically has relied on consultants, experts and gurulike intuition.”

All politics is moral (AND EMOTIONAL).

How Emotional Intelligence Creates Effective Leaders  (April 30, 2015)

Research indicates that Emotional Intelligence (E.I.) – how we handle ourselves and our relationships – can determine success more than I.Q. In fact, E.I. may determine as much as 80% of a person’s life success. Cognitive ability or what we call I.Q. is only about 20%. Quality leadership training is a combination of E.I. and cognitive ability.

MASLOW's HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

(adapted to today's society)

REFLECTION

POSSIBLE QUESTIONS

FOR DISCUSSION:

In what layer of the pyramid would you place moral values, right vs. wrong issues?

In what layer of the pyramid would you place voting

on elections?

I'm not sure that "sex belongs in "physiological needs."  Where would you put it?

Where would you place faith or belief in a higher, supernatural being or concept?

Where would you place religious dogma?

Where would you place following the law or compliance with the law, and doing what's legal?

Where would you place "wi-fi" or "a battery" (as in a cell phone or smart phone, etc)?

Why do you think so many people disregard of give less priority to the physiological need of sleep?

These are just a few of a number of modern versions of Maslow's groundbreaking pyramid.

Also from Prof. Tobin Grant:

Economic Inequality, Relative Power, and Religiosity*

Objective. What effect does the extent of economic inequality within a country have on the
religiosity of the people who live there? As inequality increases, does religion serve
primarily as a source of comfort for the deprived and impoverished or as a tool of social
control for the rich and powerful? Methods. This article examines these questions with two
complementary analyses of inequality and religiosity: a multilevel analysis of countries
around the world over two decades and a time-series analysis of the United States. . .
